Mahi Binebine

Born : 1959Documented citizenships : Morocco

Mahi Binebine, born in Marrakesh in 1959, works as a painter, sculptor and novelist. Moving to Paris in 1980 to study mathematics, he taught before devoting himself to writing and painting in the late 1980s. His career also took him to New York and Madrid. In 2002 he settled again in Marrakesh, following these years of working abroad and moving between different artistic settings.

The human figure occupies a central place in his visual investigations. Simplified outlines and compressed bodies convey isolation, vulnerability or relationships with others. Untitled, dated 2012 and held by the Dalloul Art Foundation, uses mixed media on a wooden panel. Moving between painting and sculpture extends this examination of bodily presence, which is also evident in his faces recalling the forms of masks.

This profile brings together identity references for Mahi Binebine and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
