Associated with the Barbizon School, Louis Aimé Japy devoted his artistic activity to landscape painting. His career is documented by his exhibitions at the Salon and by works held in several museums. He studied with Louis Français and Camille Corot; another notice also lists Paul Lecomte among his teachers. According to the Mark Murray Gallery, he stayed in Italy early in his career and painted Italian subjects there, before turning his attention increasingly to French landscapes.
Japy made his Salon debut in 1864 and exhibited there until the beginning of the First World War. He received a medal there in 1870, followed by a second-class medal in 1873; in 1883, he became a member of the Salon des artistes français. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1906. Among the works shown at the Salon was Le Retour du troupeau, exhibited in 1885. His exhibition activity also included participation in a group exhibition at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris in 1888, as well as a presentation in Rennes in 1897 of his Paysage pastoral.
The catalogues of the Beaux-Arts de Mâcon exhibitions provide an overview of the titles of his landscapes: Marais and Rivière are listed there in 1907, followed by Crépuscule and Bords de l’eau in 1912. Works by Japy are held in public collections, including Le Soir dans les bouleaux, an oil on canvas held at the Évreux Museum; Étude d’arbres and a Paysage dated around 1900 at the Crozatier Museum; and Avril dans les bois de Pierrefonds, dated 1887, at the Musée des beaux-arts de Pau. The Mark Murray Gallery also notes his presence in public collections in Budapest, Langres, Limoux, Morlaix, Roanne and Salford. In 1989, Emmanuelle Roy wrote a master’s thesis on the painter’s life and work.
