Pranas Domšaitis

Born : 1880Died : 1965Documented citizenships : Germany

Pranas Domšaitis (1880–1965), also known as Franz Karl Domscheit, was born in East Prussia. His art draws on his rural childhood, giving animals, farms and riders a symbolic dimension. From the formative years of 1919–1924, the Annunciation, the Flight into Egypt and the Crucifixion became enduring themes in his painting.

Travels through southeastern Europe and Turkey generated sketchbooks and pastels subsequently used as studies. In 1949 he settled in South Africa after his wife, the soprano Adelaid Armhold, was appointed to the University of Cape Town. His palette changed in response to these new landscapes. He represented South Africa at the São Paulo Biennial in 1963. His works are held by the Rupert Museum and the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.
