Originally from Colmar, Johan Stephan Decker, also known as Johann Stephan or Jean Étienne, trained in Paris under David and Jean-Jacques Karpff. Portraiture and miniature painting became his principal fields. After returning to Alsace and spending time in Budapest, he settled in Vienna in 1821. There he received aristocratic commissions and began teaching drawing to Archduchess Therese in 1827. His practice nevertheless extended beyond likenesses: genre scenes and interior views reveal an interest in places and their occupants. Using oil paint, gouache and watercolour, he represented people alongside the environments in which they lived. A portrait of Beethoven made during the composer's lifetime is among the images associated with his reputation. His career thus brought together different approaches to depicting people and rooms.
