The French painter Jean Rigaud, born in Bordeaux in 1912 and deceased in Paris in 1999, developed a body of work devoted to landscapes and still lifes, which the biographical source describes as executed in warm colours. The Île-d’Yeu holds a particular place in his career: discovered in the 1950s, it became a place to live until the end of his life and a subject for his paintings, notably its harbour and sailing school. The son of the painter Pierre-Gaston Rigaud, he bore the full name Jean Charles François Rigaud.
His activity was not limited to painting: he taught drawing at Saint-Honoré d’Eylau and Sainte-Croix de Neuilly. In 1937, he created the fresco « Lot et Garonne - Gers » with his father for the Guyenne and Gascogne pavilion at the World’s Fair; both received a gold medal. The following year, he executed paintings mounted on canvas for the church of Sainte-Eugénie in Pontonx-sur-l’Adour. A prisoner of war at Stalag VIIA in Moosburg in 1940, he produced numerous drawings there. At the end of the war, he served with Rose Valland on the art recovery commission.
Rigaud exhibited in galleries such as Paul Durand-Ruel and Galerie Carré in Brie-Comte-Robert; he also presented a work each year at most of the major Paris salons, notably at the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts, and regularly took part in the Comparaisons salon as a member of Maurice Boitel’s group. The collections of the Musée d’Art moderne de Paris include two of his oil paintings, Eygalières, le village and Yport, la falaise, as well as a lithograph entitled Honfleur, les bateaux. Among the listed works is also Rio dei Mendicanti, in Venice, dated 1982. An oil on canvas entitled Départ de New-York is described as signed at the lower left and dated on the verso (19)86. His work was the subject of a publication by Jean Ducros, with a foreword by Charles Durand-Ruel, published by Junes et Fils in 1976, followed by an exhibition catalogue from the Musée de la Marine, published in 1999.
This profile brings together identity references for Jean Rigaud and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
