Jean Revol

Born : 1929Died : 2012Documented citizenships : France

Jean Revol, a French painter, printmaker, essayist and writer born in Lyon in 1929 and deceased in 2012, pursued artistic creation alongside reflection on art. He began drawing and painting in 1942, and undertook his first writing and art criticism in 1945. He continued this critical work at the Nouvelle Revue française from 1959 to 1988; in 1961, he published Braque et Villon : message vivant du cubisme with Gallimard. His first exhibition was held in 1949 at the Galerie Alphonse Chave in Vence. Notable subsequent presentations took place at the Palais des beaux-arts de Bruxelles in 1961, the Galerie Louis Carré in Paris in 1963, and the Galerie Kara in Geneva in 1988. The catalogues for the Paris and Geneva exhibitions are associated respectively with texts by Marcel Arland, and by Jean-Louis Ferrier, Pierre Restany and Gérard Xuriguera.

Invited by Gaëtan Picon, Revol moved to the United States in 1966 and taught art history at Middlebury College. On returning to France, he received the prix de la Critique lyonnaise in 1977. His commitment to artistic creation and disability led to the founding of Personimages and its workshops, and, after his return, of Art-Crise: he then welcomed people with intellectual disabilities into his studio in Ménilmontant. Among the works cited are landscapes painted at night, from La fenêtre au feu (1964) to the Île de la Cité (1967) and the buildings of West-Broadway in New York (1969). Don Quichotte is listed among his etchings around 1960, and New-York (Broadway by night) around 1970. His books include Secrets de l’évidence (1984) and Voir l’imaginaire et imaginer le vrai (2008), both published by Éditions La Différence. Listed works in public collections include a lithograph, Portrait de Gaston Bachelard, at the Médiathèque Albert-Gabriel in Bar-sur-Aube, and Le cheval de Troie, a 150 × 250 cm chalk drawing dated 1978, at the Centre d’art Madeleine-Lambert in Vénissieux.
