Jean-Guillaume Carlier

Born : 1638Died : 1675

Jean-Guillaume Carlier (1638–1675) belonged to the artistic community of seventeenth-century Liège. He trained with Bertholet Flémal, whom he accompanied to Paris in 1670, and worked mainly for churches. Older sources also record his contribution of draperies to his teacher’s pictures, evidence of the collaborative practices that shaped workshop production.

The Martyrdom of Saint Denis, conceived for the collegiate church of Saint-Denis in Liège, is among his major religious compositions. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium hold a smaller version on canvas. Carlier also painted portraits: a Self-Portrait, dated approximately 1660–1665, is recorded at La Boverie, while the Grand Curtius preserves the Portrait of Colonel Jean Amant, around 1673. These works complement his activity as a painter for religious settings.

This profile brings together identity references for Jean-Guillaume Carlier and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
