Born and died in Düsseldorf (1935–2023), Konrad Klapheck began developing an oeuvre attentive to the ordinary objects of modernity in 1955. That year, in reaction to the abstract expressionism then in vogue, he chose to paint a sewing machine with the greatest possible precision. Typewriters, telephones, locks and domestic objects occupy a central place in his work of the 1950s. According to one source, he painted exclusively machines and domestic objects until 1997; the titles of his paintings give them symbolic significance. He completed his studies in 1958 and worked in several media, from painting to printmaking and sculpture.
The human figure appears in his work from 1997 onwards. Between 1992 and 2002, he made portraits of colleagues, friends and figures from the international art scene; a book devoted to his portrait drawings was published in Munich in 2002 under the title «Portraitzeichnungen 1992–2002». His work was the subject of a retrospective at the Boymans-Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam in 1974. An exhibition devoted to him is listed at the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg in 2005; in 2008, the Musée d’Orsay presented «Correspondances Konrad Klapheck - Gustave Moreau». In 2019, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds hosted the exhibition «Venus ex machina». In 2022–2023, «Die Ehrgeizien (Les Ambitieux)», an oil painting on canvas dated 1959, was presented at the Louvre in the exhibition «Les Choses. Une histoire de la nature morte». Werner Hofmann’s publication «Konrad Klapheck, Retrospektive» was published by Prestel in 1985.
