The Bavarian painter of genre scenes and landscapes Heinrich Bürkel (1802–1869) studied in Munich. In 1830, he exhibited at the Brussels Salon A Landscape with Figures, a Traveller Having One of His Horses Shod. In his history of modern painting, Richard Muther places him among the Munich painters associated with the shift from military painting to peasant subjects.
A work titled Kirche in der Ramsau bei Mondschein, attributed to him in an auction notice, is an oil on wood measuring 21 × 26.5 cm. The notice states that Bürkel also made the composition in a snowy winter variant; this variant appeared at auctions in Cologne in 1979 and London in 2008. Kirche in der Ramsau bei Mondschein was presented in 1969 in the exhibition Heinrich Bürkel zum 100. Todestag. Gemälde und Graphik at the Pfalzgalerie in Kaiserslautern, as number 58. The catalogue of the artist’s work compiled by Hans-Peter Bühler and Albrecht Krückl lists it in 1989 as number 386, page 268, with an illustration.
The published provenance of this work mentions the Georg Schäfer Collection in Schweinfurt, followed by a Winterberg sale in Heidelberg in 2002 and a private collection in south-western Germany. Bürkel died in Munich on 10 June 1869.
This profile brings together identity references for Heinrich Bürkel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
