Alexander Rodchenko was born in Saint Petersburg in 1891 and died in Moscow in 1956. He worked as a painter, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer. Trained partly at the Kazan School of Art, he participated in the Russian avant-garde and subsequently in Constructivist experiments. His activity developed alongside the social transformations following the revolution. Between 1920 and 1930 he taught in the woodwork and metalwork departments of Moscow’s Higher Art and Technical Studios.
His Spatial Construction no. 12, dated around 1920 by the Museum of Modern Art, transforms a sheet of plywood into a suspended volume: cut ovals unfold within one another. This investigation accompanies a trajectory from non-objective painting towards social applications of images, including typography, book design and photography.
