Born in Amsterdam in 1622, Gerrit Lundens is documented in the city during the middle and later seventeenth century. His small-scale work includes miniature portraits painted in oil on silver. The Rijksmuseum holds portraits of a fifteen-year-old boy and a fifty-year-old woman, made in 1650 inside a silver coin that can be opened to reveal the two images.
His name is also associated with a reduced copy of Rembrandt’s Night Watch, owned by the National Gallery and attributed to Lundens by the Rijksmuseum. This painting preserves parts of the composition lost when the original was cut down in the eighteenth century, particularly the figures on the left. The copy consequently provides important material evidence for understanding the earlier appearance of Rembrandt’s celebrated group portrait.
