From imaginary plants to cats and birds, Germain Van der Steen (1897–1985) created a pictorial world of vivid colour. Associated with naïve painting, this self-taught artist first worked in non-figuration before developing plant compositions and then a bestiary. Born in Versailles, he worked after the First World War as a colour merchant in the Étoile district of Paris and painted at night. His exhibition history includes the Salon d’automne in 1944, Galerie Louise in Paris in 1950 and Hutter in Basel in 1951. The international museum of naïve art in Vicq holds Le Déluge. His work continued to be exhibited after his death, including in Nice in 2002 and at the museum and art centre in Lapalisse in 2012.
This profile brings together identity references for Germain Van der Steen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
