The French painter Emmanuel Victor Auguste Marie de La Villéon, born in 1858, began studying painting in 1884 with his friends Alfred Roll and Pierre Emmanuel Eugène Damoye. He settled in Paris in 1890 and studied at the Académie Julian. A landscape painter who worked from nature, he is distinguished, according to the biographical entry, by a very colourful palette. His first trip abroad took him to Holland in 1889, where he discovered a new light.
In 1900, he acquired the Salvard estate in Bitry, near Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, in the Nièvre. Initially a second home, the property became his main residence from 1915 to 1930. The Nièvre Puisaye inspired slightly less than 30% of his work, according to the entry. His output encompasses canvases, pastels, drawings, watercolours and oil paintings. Works listed in Fougères include an Autoportrait of 1889, painted in oil on canvas, as well as Sur la route de Noréaz, près d’Yverdon en Suisse and Les Foins dans le champ du parc de Salvar, both listed as oil paintings on canvas.
From 1890, de La Villéon exhibited, among other venues, at the Salon des indépendants, the Salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts, the Salon d’automne and the Salon des Tuileries. In 1909, he founded the Société moderne with other painters. His exhibitions abroad included presentations in the United States and Canada in 1918, in Copenhagen in 1925 and in Japan in 1927. His last solo exhibition during the artist’s lifetime was held in 1943 at the Galerie La Boétie in Paris.
