Egill Jacobsen

Born : 1910Died : 1998

The mask became an essential motif early in the work of Egill Jacobsen (1910–1998), a Danish painter born in Copenhagen. During a visit to Paris in 1934, he encountered works by Matisse, Picasso, Léger and Miró. He subsequently developed a language also informed by prehistoric and popular Scandinavian art. By 1935, his large studies carried titles such as “masks” or “objects”. During the Second World War, he participated in the group associated with the journal Helhesten, before joining CoBrA, active from 1948 to 1951. His first solo exhibition took place at Galerie Birch in Copenhagen in 1952. He later became professor at the city’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The Statens Museum for Kunst holds works by the artist.
