Jan de Bisschop (1628–1671), born in Amsterdam and deceased in The Hague, was a Dutch lawyer who also practised drawing and etching. He worked in The Hague from the 1650s and belonged to an educated circle of art lovers. Also known by the Latinized name Johannes Episcopius, he developed a style of brown-wash drawing attentive to light and atmosphere, close to that of Bartholomeus Breenbergh.
His landscapes include views around Leiden and The Hague. He also drew Italian monuments and ruins, although a journey to Italy has not been established. His print series Signorum veterum icones and Paradigmata graphices disseminated antique models and works by established masters for artistic instruction. The Fondation Custodia holds several of his sheets, including a View of Amersfoort executed in pen and wash.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan de Bisschop and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
