Jacob van Ruisdael (around 1628–1682), born into an artistic family in Haarlem, was a leading Dutch landscape painter of the seventeenth century. His father Isaack was a painter, dealer and frame-maker; his uncle Salomon van Ruysdael specialised in river landscapes. Jacob joined Haarlem’s painters’ guild in 1648. Around 1650, a journey to the Bentheim region expanded his repertoire, before he settled in Amsterdam, where he is documented by 1657.
His dunes, forests, waterfalls and panoramas combine observation with invention. Trees, clouds and contrasts of light give the landscape a distinctive expressive force. The Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede and his views of Haarlem demonstrate this monumental organisation of space. He trained Meindert Hobbema, whose apprenticeship is documented, and exerted a lasting influence on landscape painting.
