David Malkin (1910–2002) was a painter and sculptor of Jewish origin, born in Akkerman, Bessarabia, now Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi in Ukraine. His career took him from Eastern Europe to Palestine, then to Italy and France. He emigrated to British Mandate Palestine in 1934, settled in Haifa in 1936 and lived in Jerusalem from 1938 to 1947. The Schlosser Gallery exhibited his sculptures there in 1938. Following a period in Florence, he moved to Paris in 1955 and attended André Lhote’s studio. Painting gradually became his main medium, taking over from sculpture. His work moved from figuration towards abstraction while retaining references to Hebrew letters and Hasidic figures. He particularly favoured small formats and paper supports. Associated with the second School of Paris, Malkin developed a body of work in which colour accompanies the transformation of figures and signs. He died in Ballainvilliers in 2002.
