Eliza Douglas approaches painting through images already in circulation: animated characters, logos and graphics drawn from music and fashion cultures. After studying film at Bard College, she attended Frankfurt’s Städelschule from 2015 to 2017. Music, modelling and performance accompany her painting. Her own digital photographs provide references for oil paintings whose methods connect with sign painting. This movement between media questions relationships between advertising, identity and the consumption of images. In another series, hands and feet are linked through varied painterly treatments, with some naturalistic passages entrusted to other painters. Her collaboration with Anne Imhof and the exhibition Old Tissues Filled with Tears, presented in Berlin in 2017, exemplify this practice’s openness to exchange.
