Born in 1920 and deceased in 2013, Jean Jansem trained in Paris from 1936 under Maurice Brianchon, Raymond Legueult and Roland Oudot at the École des arts décoratifs, where he received his diploma in 1938. After taking part in the Salon des indépendants in 1941, he was selected for the Salon d’automne in 1945; in 1953, he was awarded the Antral Prize by the City of Paris.
Stays in Greece, Spain and Italy form part of his career; he returned to Greece as early as 1950, the year the Galerie Doucet in Paris presented his paintings. In 1954, the Galerie Hervé showed Visages d’Espagne there. Alongside painting and drawing, Jansem produced lithographs and engravings related to his themes. His work as an illustrator includes, in particular, Le Spleen de Paris by Charles Baudelaire, published in 1963, and Noces de sang by Federico García Lorca, published in 1977.
In 1969, the Mitsukoshi Gallery presented a retrospective of his work in Tokyo. Two museums are dedicated to him: one in Ginza, Tokyo, in 1992, and then one in Azumino in 1993. In 2002, he travelled to Armenia for the opening of his exhibition Massacres at the Genocide Museum in Yerevan. In 2003, he was made a Knight of the Légion d’honneur.
