Charles Milcendeau (1872–1919) developed his work between the Vendée and encounters across Europe. After attending the Académie Julian, he entered Gustave Moreau’s studio at the École des beaux-arts in Paris in 1892. His circle there included Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault and Henri Evenepoel. The latter introduced him to Francisco Iturrino, through whom he discovered Spain, a country he visited repeatedly.
Drawing and portraiture dominated his early years. He subsequently also depicted the inhabitants and landscapes of the Vendée marshes, including flooded terrain. In 1905 he bought a property at Bois-Durand in Soullans, decorating his house and studio with frescoes inspired by Mozarabic art. The home thus brings together his attachment to his native region and the visual memories of his travels.
This profile brings together identity references for Charles Milcendeau and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
