Moshe Gershuni (1936–2017), born in Tel Aviv, holds an important place in post-war Israeli art. During the 1970s he belonged to a conceptual avant-garde concerned with the creative process and art’s political significance. Representing Israel at the 1980 Venice Biennale marked a turning point towards an intensely physical painting practice.
Working on sheets laid across the floor, he spread colour with his fingers, combining material, gesture and Hebrew inscriptions. Prayers, Holocaust memory, soldiers and floral images intersect in work that connects intimate experience with collective history. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art devoted a retrospective to him in 2010–2011. In 2014 Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie presented No Father No Mother, bringing together the painterly, verbal and memorial dimensions of his work.
This profile brings together identity references for Moshe Gershuni and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
