Bernard Moninot

Born : 1949Documented citizenships : France

Born in 1949 in Le Fay, in Saône-et-Loire, Bernard Moninot develops a practice that engages with traces, shadows and drawing. From 1992, in the series Ombres portées, forms in enamelled metal cast their shadows on the wall; from 1999, he sets out to collect “drawings of the wind” with an instrument of his own invention. His participation in the Paris Biennale in 1971 and again in 1973, where he presents his first Vitrines, precedes his first solo exhibition, held in 1974 at the Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne.

In the early 1980s, glass becomes a support for his work: on its reverse, he affixes soot, pigments, iron filings, silica or graphite powder. Several solo exhibitions subsequently mark his career, notably at the Fondation Maeght in 1979, at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1997, and then, between 2021 and 2022, at the Domaine de Kerguéhennec, the Musée de l’Hospice Saint-Roch in Issoudun and the Fondation Maeght. This last exhibition is devoted to expanded drawing.

Two publications shed light on different periods and aspects of his work: a monograph published in 2013 by André Dimanche éditions traces his work from 1972 to 2012; in 2014, Bernard Moninot. Dessin(s), edited by Emmanuelle Brugerolles and published by Beaux-Arts de Paris éditions, appears.
