Michel Macréau (1935–1995) was a French painter who combined figures and inscriptions in a dense graphic language. His training included the Grande Chaumière, and he also worked in ceramic workshops in Vallauris. From the 1960s he developed a narrative approach in which bodies, faces and words occupy unconventional supports, including wooden boards, bedsheets and postal sacks. Thick applications of paint and direct gestures give these works affinities with graffiti.
Cérès Franco supported his career over many years, presenting his work in exhibitions and subsequently at her Galerie L’Œil-de-Bœuf. The collection of the Coopérative-Musée Cérès Franco preserves that longstanding relationship. The Espace Paul Rebeyrolle devoted an exhibition to him in 1999. His work is often discussed as a precursor to Figuration libre, while retaining a personal vocabulary centred on human experience.
This profile brings together identity references for Michel Macréau and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
