Alphonse Lamotte trained with Jean-Jacques Outhwaite and Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont before making his Salon debut in 1869. His printmaking combined portraiture with the interpretation of works by other artists. From Ingres to Poussin and from Léopold Robert to Meissonier, his models covered varied subjects, ranging from literary themes to historical compositions. He also translated a relief devoted to Mirabeau by Jules Dalou, carrying a sculptural work into the space of the print. His practice therefore involved transferring images between techniques and supports. In Le Havre, Lamotte directed the fine arts school, taught and served as curator of the municipal museum. His career connected graphic production, education and the care of artworks alongside regular participation in the Salons.
