Albert André’s path leads from training as an industrial draughtsman to a practice of painting in which colour helps construct volume. Before leaving for Paris, he trained as an industrial draughtsman in his hometown; the Tomaselli Collection also mentions training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, followed by his entry, at the age of 23, into William Bouguereau’s studio at the Académie Julian. The sources first evoke the influence of Delacroix, then the importance of Cézanne in lightening his palette and in his discovery of volume achieved through colour; they also highlight the significant role of his friendship with Renoir. His work addresses varied subjects, notably urban scenes with figures and interior scenes; Maisons et collines à Laudun offers a documented example: an oil on canvas, signed at lower right, bearing an artist’s label dated 1927 on the reverse.
After working in Paris, André settled in the Midi. In 1917, he accepted the post of curator of the Bagnols-sur-Cèze museum, which he held until his death in 1954. He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne from 1904 to 1944, became a member and designed the exhibition poster in 1927; from 1923, his works were sometimes shown at the Salon des Tuileries. In 1924, he also exhibited in New York and Buenos Aires. Through Renoir’s art dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, he sold a great deal in the United States. His connection with Renoir is also reflected in his writings: in 1923, he gathered his recollections of the painter in the preface to an album of collotypes devoted to his works.
An exhibition devoted to him was held in Montbéliard in 2015, under the title « Albert André, intimité d’un peintre réaliste », followed by another at the Archives départementales du Gard in Nîmes, from 11 October 2019 to 9 March 2020.
