Born in Paris on 18 May 1937, Alain Bonnefoit has an artistic practice encompassing painting, sculpture, lithography and drawing. A painter of nudes, he works notably in oil and sumi-e, a Japanese ink technique in which the drawing is made in a single stroke.
His training took him from the École des arts appliqués Duperré, where he studied from 1953 to 1955, to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, where he studied from 1956 to 1957. He then continued his studies at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Bruxelles from 1959 to 1960, before working at the Beaux-Arts de Paris with the sculptor Antoniucci Volti.
His solo exhibitions are recorded notably at the galerie d’art Matignon between 1969 and 1972, at the moulin de Vauboyen in 1974, and at the galerie de la Place Beauvau in Paris in 1975, 1978 and 1981. The galerie Nettis in Le Touquet devoted an exhibition to him in May–June 1984; a retrospective was organised at the château de Vascœuil in 1996. He also took part in group exhibitions at the galerie Art Comparaison in Paris in 2002, and then at the galerie Béatrice Bellat in Paris in 2012.
Drawing and lithography feature in several illustrated books to which he contributed. In 1986, he created illustrations with Michel Jouenne for Qui j’ose aimer by Hervé Bazin. He provided the drawings for Chansons clandestines by Pierre Louki, published in 1999, and then published Dessins érotiques, accompanied by poems by Michel Bénard, in 2010. An edition of Les Fleurs du mal by Charles Baudelaire was published in 2011 with his lithographs and a CD by Léo Ferré.
