Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot’s views are often organised around a broad road, sometimes running diagonally, which draws the eye into the distance between houses, churches or city walls. Numerous and varied figures drawn from peasant life animate these scenes. According to Lempertz, this manner belongs to the Flemish tradition of Pieter Brueghel and David Vinckboons.
Droochsloot worked in Amsterdam from 1610 to 1615; he may have been a pupil of David Vinckboons. The earliest known painting by him is dated 1615. He is said to have lived in The Hague afterwards. In 1624, he moved to the Plompetorengracht. His work went hand in hand with involvement in the life of his community: he was appointed dean of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1623, 1641 and 1642, and subsequently held several civic and religious offices in Utrecht, including governor of the Sint Jacobsgasthuis in 1638 and dean of the Reformed Church in 1642. He was also an officer of the Schuttersgilde in 1650 and 1651, and then a member of the Utrecht painters’ college in 1665–1666.
His son Cornelis, born in 1630 and later a painter, worked with him in a studio whose productions are difficult to distinguish. Works recorded in public collections include a Self-Portrait in a Landscape of 1627, held at the Hermitage; a Village Scene dated 1638 at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec; and a Winter in a Dutch Town at the Hermitage and a Village Fair at the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent.
