Hedwig Öhring (1855–1907), also known as Oehring, was a Munich painter devoted to figures from everyday life. Her small oil paintings depict village schoolteachers, peasants, hunters and musicians, bringing portraiture into contact with genre painting. She made her debut at the Sächsischer Kunstverein in 1880 with a depiction of a monk studying. In 1882, she presented nine paintings from the cycle Typen aus dem bayerischen Volksleben, including a tinker, a horn player and a priest reading. These characters give thematic coherence to her repertoire. A member of the Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft, Öhring is represented in Berlin’s Nationalgalerie collection. Her precise training remains less clearly established than this exhibition activity.
This profile brings together identity references for Hedwig Öhring and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
