Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727–1785) was an Italian painter and printmaker whose career developed in England. Born in Florence, he travelled to Rome in 1750 to continue his training. There he met architect William Chambers and sculptor Joseph Wilton, with whom he went to England in 1755. He worked as a decorative painter for the aristocracy and became a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768.
Drawing occupies an important place in his work, and the British Museum holds a substantial collection. The sheet Schwebende Amoretten depicts cupids floating in space. Executed in brown pen and brush on laid paper, it measures 23 × 18.4 cm and bears the inscription “Cipriani”. Flowing lines and washes contribute to the decorative character of the composition.
This profile brings together identity references for Giovanni Battista Cipriani and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
