Jan Thomas van Ieperen (1617–1678) pursued a career as a painter and printmaker that extended from Antwerp’s artistic circles to the court in Vienna. Born in Ypres, he was established in Antwerp during the 1640s, taking apprentices and marrying Jacoba Maria Cnobbaert. By the late 1650s, his family lived in Vienna. He received imperial commissions there, depicting Leopold I and Margaret Theresa in theatrical costumes for their wedding celebrations in 1666. His subjects also included religious scenes and mythological or pastoral landscapes. In printmaking, he practised mezzotint from around 1658; his portrait of Titian, dated 1661, is dedicated to Empress Eleonora.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Thomas van Ieperen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
