Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté (1869–1937) was a Quebec painter, pastellist and sculptor born in Arthabaska. After his initial training in Canada, he went to Paris in 1891, studying at the École des beaux-arts and the Académies Julian and Colarossi. His travels between Europe and America did not displace his attachment to the landscapes of his native region, where he maintained a studio. Portraits, rural scenes and still lifes broadened his subject matter.
The pastel Nuages s’approchant de la rive, dated 1900 in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, concentrates on cloud formations and their reflections. Pastel allowed him to investigate colour relationships while producing independent works. His sculpture is represented at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec by Le Pionnier, a tinted-plaster statuette of 1925.
