George Bernard O'Neill, born in Dublin in 1828, trained at the Royal Academy Schools after moving to England. He exhibited there from 1847 and developed genre painting centred on rural and domestic life. Introduced to the Cranbrook artists' colony in 1859, he used Old Wilsley House as the setting for many scenes. Interiors and figures complement one another in these narratives of everyday life; in a collaboration with Frederick Daniel Hardy, responsibility for the setting and the figure was even divided between the two painters. Despite these ties to Kent, O'Neill maintained a house and studio in London. His career connected the colony's artistic exchanges, familiar subjects and the cultural life of the capital. He died in London in 1917.
