Alois Greil worked as a painter and illustrator between Austria and Germany. A pupil of Christian Ruben at the Vienna Academy, he later worked in Stuttgart before settling permanently in Vienna. Watercolour and drawing occupy an important place in his practice. His subjects explore encounters and occupations within ordinary life: tourists, itinerant musicians and circus performances form a repertoire centred on the human figure. Circus scenes appear in watercolour as well as in pencil drawings with wash, revealing a continuity of interests across different techniques. The small dimensions of many sheets give these narratives a concentrated format, inviting a close reading of the situations and the people taking part in them.
This profile brings together identity references for Alois Greil and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
