Alexandre Roubtzoff (Saint Petersburg, 1884–Tunis, 1949) was a Russian-born painter whose work became closely associated with Tunisia. He trained under Dmitry Kardovsky at the Imperial Academy in Saint Petersburg, winning a major prize and a travel scholarship in 1912. After visiting Andalusia and Tangier, he reached Tunis in 1914 and made Tunisia the principal setting for his life and work. He became a French citizen in 1924, maintained connections with France and exhibited in Paris. His portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life combine academic training with a particular sensitivity to Mediterranean light. Clothing, jewellery, tattoos and the poses of his sitters give many works a documentary dimension. The Musée des Beaux-Arts Salies in Bagnères-de-Bigorre holds paintings including Puits à Hammamet and La vieille Alia filant la laine. Several views of Parisian streets in the Musée Carnavalet also demonstrate the geographical range of his subjects beyond the North African settings for which he is known.
