Pieter Withoos was a Dutch painter and draughtsman of the later seventeenth century, from an artistic family in Amersfoort. Like his father and siblings, he worked with representations of the natural world. Agneta Block commissioned drawings of plants, insects and birds from her collection at Vijverhof, her estate beside the Vecht.
Purple Oleander, dated 1691 in the Getty Museum, uses watercolour with selectively applied gum on laid paper. At the Rijksmuseum, a sheet bringing together five butterflies, a wasp and two flies combines watercolour, opaque colours and silver ink. The museum stresses that this composition favours contrasting colours and decorative arrangement over scientific demonstration. Close attention to natural detail is therefore accompanied by an independent concern with the placement and visual relationships of forms.
This profile brings together identity references for Pieter Withoos and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
