Paula Modersohn-Becker

Born : 1876Died : 1907

Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876–1907) was a German painter born in Dresden. After training in Bremen, she moved to Worpswede in 1898 and became involved with its artists’ colony. She married Otto Modersohn in 1901. Her stays in Paris enabled her to attend the Académie Colarossi and explore museums and galleries. Responding to the Nabis, Gauguin and Cézanne, she simplified forms and gave rural subjects a presence extending beyond genre painting. Her portraits of children avoid idealisation, while her late self-portraits include female nudes. Still lifes of fruit and flowers also form a distinct part of her artistic exploration. In 1906, she exhibited with her husband at the Kunsthalle in Bremen.
