Born in 1938, Pierre Skira pursues painting alongside a sustained activity as a writer. The son of publisher Albert Skira, he works particularly in pastel, a medium also found in his still lifes. His figurative practice brings the sensuous presence of objects into contact with carefully constructed images, a relationship explored in Patrick Mauriès’s book on his work. Literature also enters his career through collaboration: in 2002 he published Tondo, followed by Traité d’incertitude, with Pascal Quignard. His own fiction includes the novel Les Orgues de glace, published in 2008. Painting and writing thus form complementary strands of his practice, while the pictures retain an existence beyond the illustration of literary material.
This profile brings together identity references for Pierre Skira and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
