Coasts and English landscapes hold an important place in the work of Rudolf Hellwag (1867–1942). Born in Innsbruck, the German marine and landscape painter studied in Munich and Karlsruhe, including with Ferdinand Keller and Gustav Schönleber. His travels took him to the North Sea and Baltic coasts, Scandinavia, Italy and New York. He spent time in Cornwall before settling in London in 1903. Beaches, parks and gardens furnished his repertoire, later joined by subjects from Lake Constance. He also produced murals for buildings in Karlsruhe and Heidelberg University Library. Among the works recorded is Morgen auf der Themse, dated 1907, at the Kunsthalle Mannheim.
This profile brings together identity references for Rudolf Hellwag and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
