Dune or river landscapes, often dominated by fortified towers, characterise Frans de Hulst’s painting. His early works evoke the technique of Salomon van Ruysdael; this resemblance has led to the suggestion that he trained with him, although the biographical source cites no historical evidence in support. For most of the works from the 1640s, it also notes affinities with the painting of Jan van Goyen.
His career is linked to the Haarlem Guild of St Luke, which he joined in 1631; he became its secretary in 1642. He died in Haarlem on 29 December 1661.
A Lempertz catalogue lists under his name two small oil-on-panel landscapes, each 22 cm in diameter. These works are referenced in the bibliography of H. U. Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen, published in Augsburg in 1991. The published provenance traces them, among others, through J. Goudstikker in Amsterdam, Paul Graupe in Berlin in 1936 — where they were listed under the name van Goyen — and then E. Plietzsch in Berlin around 1950, before they entered a Berlin private collection.
This profile brings together identity references for Frans de Hulst and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
