Franz Eybl was born in Vienna in 1806 and died there in 1880. A painter and lithographer, he is associated with Biedermeier culture. Entering the Vienna Academy at an early age, he studied sculpture, landscape and history painting before becoming particularly known for portraits. Precise physiognomies and carefully handled paint characterise this practice. His genre paintings also depict people from the Salzkammergut region.
The Princely Collections of Liechtenstein hold The Strawberry Seller from Hallstatt and Berry-picker against a Mountain Landscape, two paintings on wooden panels dated 1844. Reading Girl, painted in 1850 and held by the Belvedere, explores another register: a figure absorbed in her book, isolated against a neutral background. The distribution of light and warm colours gives this intimate scene its concentrated atmosphere.
This profile brings together identity references for Franz Eybl and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
