The Dutch painter Simon Pietersz Verelst, born in The Hague in 1644 and died in London in 1721, is generally known as Simon Verelst. He divided his career between the United Provinces and England. Trained by his father, the painter Pieter Hermansz. Verelst, he belonged to a family of artists and was the brother of the painters Herman and Johannes.
In 1663, he became a member of the Confrérie Pictura in The Hague, then settled in Voorburg, where he worked until 1668. After leaving the Netherlands, he settled in London under the protection of the Duke of Buckingham. During his stay in England, he travelled to Paris, probably accompanied by his pupil, the painter Louis Michiel; this journey is dated to 1680.
His work includes still lifes and portraits. Flower compositions have a discernible place among the works catalogued under his name: a vase of flowers is recorded at the Bredius Museum, and the Ashmolean Museum holds a work entitled A Vase of Flowers. Portraiture is represented in particular by likenesses of Nell Gwyn, catalogued under his name, including one in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
