Luc Tuymans

Born in 1958 in Mortsel, Belgium, Luc Tuymans lives and works in Antwerp. His figurative paintings generally take pre-existing images as their starting point, including photographs and video stills; their sparse palette and restrained tonality can also be unsettling.
After studying art at the Saint-Luc higher art schools from 1976 to 1979, he put painting aside between 1980 and 1985 to focus on experimental film. When he returned to painting in 1985, he changed his technique. His first major museum presentations took place in 1990, in Ostend and Ghent. In 1992, he took part in documenta IX in Kassel and presented a solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Bern. Opened in 1994 at Portikus in Frankfurt, the exhibition “Luc Tuymans: Superstition” subsequently travelled to New York, Toronto, Chicago, London and Philadelphia. In 2001, he represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale.
“Cockeyed”, a 1991 oil on canvas measuring 50 × 60 cm, is listed as LTP 119 in the first volume of the catalogue raisonné of his paintings, devoted to the period 1972–1994. The entry for the work documents its presentation at Kunsthalle Bern in 1992, followed by its presentation at Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld in 1993. His entire painted oeuvre is also documented in a three-volume catalogue raisonné, covering 1972–2018 and listing more than five hundred paintings.
