Friedrich Otto Georgi

Documented citizenships : Germany

Friedrich Otto Georgi (1819–1874), born in Leipzig, received his first instruction from his father, the painter Friedrich Traugott Georgi, before studying at the Dresden Academy. Initially a landscape painter, he was commissioned in 1843 to join Richard Lepsius’s Prussian expedition to Egypt and Nubia as a draughtsman, replacing Johann Jakob Frey.

Studies made during the journey continued to inform his paintings of Eastern monuments and landscapes. After returning, he exhibited in Berlin and Dresden, lived in Rome from 1853 to 1855, and settled permanently in Dresden in 1858. His drawings also supplied the woodcut series Die heiligen Stätten, published in 1855. The watercolour The Royal Tombs of Meroe, dated 1872, continues this archaeological repertoire.

This profile brings together identity references for Friedrich Otto Georgi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
