Wilhelm Kray (Berlin, 1828 – Munich, 1889) was a German painter of portraits, genre scenes and marine subjects. After working as a goldsmith, he began studying at the Berlin Academy in 1848, with teachers including Julius Schrader and Wilhelm Schirmer. During a stay in Paris in 1859–1860, he visited the studios of Alexandre Cabanel and Paul Baudry. He moved to Rome in 1867 and subsequently lived in Venice and Vienna before settling in Munich in 1883. His paintings frequently combine landscapes with idealised female figures: nymphs, Nereids and legendary characters inhabit coastlines and moonlit waters. Alongside these poetic compositions, Kray produced portraits and illustrations. The legend of the Lorelei was among the literary subjects he explored in both painting and illustration.
