Maxime Maufra, a French painter born in Nantes in 1861, began studying painting with Charles Leduc and his brother Alfred, copying landscapes along the banks of the Loire. Landscape remained at the heart of his work, with a documented predilection for seascapes of Brittany. On returning to France in 1884, he initially continued his professional activity alongside his painting, then decided to devote himself fully to painting. A stay in Pont-Aven in 1890 brought him into contact with Paul Gauguin and Paul Sérusier. Subsequently, the Durand-Ruel gallery became his dealer and remained so until the artist’s death.
In 1892, Maufra presented a monographic display of his work at the second exhibition of Impressionist and Symbolist painters, held at Le Barc de Boutteville in Paris. In 1903, he co-founded the Salon d’automne with Frantz Jourdain at the Petit Palais. That same year, he settled on a farm in Kerhostin, which he acquired in 1910. His regionalist commitment was also expressed through his participation in the activities of the « beaux-arts » section of the Union régionaliste bretonne. He was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1906, then Peintre de la Marine in 1916.
Several works held in public collections illustrate the diversity of his landscapes. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes holds La Prairie d’amont, an 1888 oil on canvas measuring 79 × 109 cm; the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest holds Marine par gros temps, dated 1899 and measuring 150 × 208.5 cm. The Art Institute of Chicago also lists Douarnenez in Sunshine, dated 1897. In 1996, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper devoted an exhibition to the years in Pont-Aven and Le Pouldu, on view from 29 June to 30 September.
