William Tomkins was an eighteenth-century British painter who died in London in 1792. He exhibited at the Free Society of Artists from 1761, and subsequently at the Society of Artists and the Royal Academy. His landscapes include estates, country houses and their surroundings. Some compositions circulated as prints in publications devoted to the properties of the nobility.
A View of Cliveden, held by the National Trust, shows the house above the Thames, together with farm buildings, fields and boats. The architecture belongs to a broad landscape dominated by the sky. Swanage Museum also documents an engraving of Encombe made in 1774 by Victor Marie Picot after Tomkins. These works exemplify a topographical painting practice combining the description of places with the representation of landed estates.
This profile brings together identity references for William Tomkins and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
