Louis Tinayre

Born : 1861Died : 1920Documented citizenships : France

The career of Louis Tinayre brings together drawings and photographs made on expeditions, large-scale panoramic displays and mural painting. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine on 14 March 1861, he developed an artistic practice focused on travel and its representation. In 1895, sent by Le Monde illustré to cover the second expedition to Madagascar, he spent six months there, making drawings and photographs. On his return, he created eight dioramas measuring five metres by four, shown at the Exposition nationale et coloniale de Rouen in 1896. The Panorama de Madagascar was subsequently presented at the Exposition universelle of 1900.

From 1901, Tinayre accompanied Prince Albert Ier on his hunting trips and painted travel scenes in North Africa, Russia, the American Far West — particularly Wyoming — and at the North Pole. The biographical source also describes him as the official painter of the Prince’s scientific expeditions. In Paris, together with Alexandre Jean-Baptiste Brun, he created the four murals in the grand amphitheatre of the Institut océanographique: Tinayre painted the figures, while Brun depicted the sea and the rigging. An auction catalogue describes a signed oil on canvas dated 1915, entitled « Messe de Minuit, Noël 1914 dans les carrières de Confrecourt, plateau de Nouvron », measuring 93 × 73 cm. His paintings associated with Prince Albert Ier were shown at the musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris from 30 March to 24 July 2016. A retrospective devoted to Tinayre was held in Monaco, at the salle du quai Antoine Ier, in the summer of 2022.
