For Heinrich Hermanns (1862–1942), a painter and lithographer from Düsseldorf, landscape developed into a growing attention to light in cities and interiors. He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy between 1883 and 1893, notably under Eugen Dücker, and co-founded the Lucas-Club in 1889. Travels in Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands broadened a repertoire initially focused on Holland and western Germany. He approached these landscapes with broad applications of colour. In his later architectural works, often watercolours, atmosphere took precedence over detailed descriptions of buildings. A view of an Amsterdam canal with the Westerkerk illustrates his interest in urban space. He participated in major exhibitions in Munich, Berlin and Düsseldorf.
