Louis Legrand (1863–1951), born in Dijon, attended evening classes at the local art school while working in a bank. He moved to Paris in 1884, learned printmaking from Félicien Rops and favoured aquatint in monochrome or colour. He contributed to Le Courrier français from 1887 and gained wider recognition through his illustrations of the cancan for Gil Blas illustré in 1891.
Legrand observed rehearsals and backstage activity as closely as performances. Le Cours de danse fin de siècle, Les Petites du Ballet and La Petite Classe explore the training and labour of dancers. Drawing, pastel and printmaking accompanied his investigations of Parisian nightlife. A substantial exhibition at Samuel Bing’s gallery in 1896 and appointment to the Legion of Honour in 1906 marked his growing recognition.
This profile brings together identity references for Луи Легран and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
