Jean Dubuffet

Born : 1901Died : 1985Documented citizenships : France

The career of Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985), born in Le Havre and died in Paris, is marked by several returns to artistic practice, interspersed with periods devoted to commerce. After taking classes at the École des beaux-arts du Havre, he enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris, but soon left, preferring to learn on his own. After an initial period of research, he worked in his family’s wine business before founding a wine-trading business in Bercy. In 1934, he put his business under management and resumed his artistic experiments. In the autumn of 1942, he returned to painting with the intention of devoting himself to it entirely. The following year, he produced the Métro series; the painting Métro, dated March 1943, is an oil on canvas.

In 1948, Dubuffet created the Foyer de l’Art Brut. He subsequently organised a first exhibition of his collection and published L’Art Brut préféré aux arts culturels, thereby helping to make this approach known. In the summer of 1962, he began the L’Hourloupe cycle, based on red and blue ballpoint-pen drawings made during a telephone conversation. He subsequently developed this cycle in painting, sculpture and architecture. A drawing such as Bédouin sur un chameau, traces de pas, dated 1948, combines pencil and coloured chalk on paper; it is signed and dated at the lower right. A retrospective at the Musée des Arts décoratifs, conceived by François Mathey, brings together four hundred works.

This profile brings together identity references for Jean Dubuffet and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
